The Western Green Hydrogen Initiative
The Western Green Hydrogen Initiative (WGHI) is a public-private partnership to advance and accelerate deployment of green hydrogen infrastructure in the Western region for the benefit of our economies and environment. The WGHI serves as the steering committee enabling the establishment of a regional green hydrogen strategy to develop a large scale, long-duration, renewable energy storage reserve.
Meet Our Western State Representatives, Supporting States, and Industry Participants
This initiative includes representatives from 11 western states and two Canadian provinces – all part of the Western Interconnection – and additional states, including Florida, Ohio, and Louisiana. The WGHI also includes representation from industry partners, non-profit stakeholders, the Department of Energy, and more. Download our participant list for an up-to-date roster of our participants.
WGHI Objectives
The transformation to a clean and reliable electric grid requires a cost-effective, scalable, technically feasible, zero-emission energy storage solution: green hydrogen.
The mission of this task force is to identify and support pathways to scale green hydrogen production and use, reducing cost and providing the following regional benefits:
Create Jobs
Support a Clean Electric Grid
Clean Air for All Communities
Reduce Agricultural and Municipal Waste
Diversify Fuels
Prevent Renewable Energy Curtailment
Re-Use Existing Infrastructure
Avoid Costly Transmission Build Out
Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Meet the Western Green Hydrogen Initiative Leadership
The WGHI is a state-led organization, in which four leading states chair and serve as part the Executive Committee for creating and approving work process and products. The founding organizations - the Green Hydrogen Coalition, the Western Interstate Energy Board, and the National Association of State Energy Officials - support the states by providing convening, collecting and disseminating information, modeling, and reporting for state roadmaps for green hydrogen as part of their energy and economic planning.
“As a clean resource for multiple diverse sectors, green hydrogen is the new clean strategic fuel for everyone. With all of the challenges we have been facing in the West, we must work quickly.”
—Dr. Laura Nelson, Former Executive Director of the Green Hydrogen Coalition
